MY-380 Won't Print? A Field Fix for a Print Wheel That Won't Turn

A customer called: MY-380 powered up, but nothing landed on the cartons. The type wheel wasn't turning. Before you tear into the gear train, look the other direction — at the photo-eye. That's what actually tells the coder an item is under the print head. Lose that signal and the wheel never gets the trigger to rotate. On this machine, that's exactly what had happened.
Here's how the call went, in order:
- Rule out the mechanical side. Ink roller seated and inked, type wheel spinning freely by hand, power steady. All good — the wheel wasn't jammed.
- Watch the sensor. Pass a product through the photo-eye. The indicator should switch. It didn't. No detection, no trigger, no print.
- Clean, then check connections. Dust is a common culprit on carton lines, but wiping the lens changed nothing, and the wiring was sound.
- Replace the photo-eye. A low-cost, off-the-shelf part — swapped and rewired in minutes.
- Test run. Product through, wheel turns, code lands where it should. Job done.
Cases like this are why the MY-380 holds up on busy packaging benches: a solid ink roller means no solvent, no pump and no daily top-ups; codes come out dry and legible on cartons, paper bags and labels; and the mechanics stay simple, so faults get traced in minutes instead of shifts.
